Always at the right time do I come across this letter. It was written to me by my (maybe ten year old) nephew André Reynolds nineteen years ago. At the time he was dealing with illness and a teacher who had not yet grasped how amazing he was, how sick he had been or why he was missing so much school. She just thought he was a slacker (but still making all A’s and B’s). She told him, “You’d better get your act together!” My favorite line in the letter reads, “I never knew fifth grade could be so hard.”
I love the fact this amazing Kid, who has seriously been conquering battles since the womb, didn’t allow people, circumstances or the fifth grade to define him or make him quit and he doesn’t allow it now.
Life can be hard at times. It will throw unexpected hardships. At times we will feel like there’s just no way… It is too much… It is unfair… People and situations will always try to get in our faces. We are forever growing- forever learning. We make good choices and we err at times. We seem to be forever pressing. Life! But listen, we must never quit. We must never forget that if we hold on, if we keep doing what is right, and if we learn to draw on that inner strength, fifth grade will eventually end. We will look back and see that we prevailed. We made it through that hard time and now our story- our experience can help someone else.

The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy and loving-kindness, O Lord, endure forever--forsake not the works of Your own hands.
For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment.
“And I will bless those who bless you (Genesis 12:3).”
